The NHS do offer counselling however waiting lists are often long and the number of sessions and choice of therapy offered limited. A private practitioner can tailor their approach to an individual’s requirements.
Our work together may be either short-term or longer. Many clients prefer open ended sessions with no fixed end date. Entering a therapeutic setting is a new and unusual experience and it may take time for a client to settle into the work. Others prefer a timed limited approach. A private practitioner can offer you that choice.

- The opportunity to speak to a professional within a safe place who will not judge you.
- Gaining an understanding of the patterns that lead to negative thoughts and behaviours which prevent you from living your life as you would like.
- Support to help you cope with your life and gain control.
- Development of ways to make changes.
This is difficult to answer – it depends on the issue. If you have been in a negative situation for a long time then it could be anything up to 12 sessions or more. Sometimes, however, all we need is to offload our feelings over a few sessions in order to lighten a load off our mind and to feel we have been listened to. I work together with my client regularly evaluating our progress.
I work with individuals over 18 and accept referrals from medical practitioners, other support agencies and self-referrals.
Counselling is not about telling my clients what to do. I believe that people are experts in their own lives.
Instead I encourage them to explore their feelings and concerns, at their own pace, to enable them to help themselves. In this way I believe that this helps to remove the fear of change that many of us experience.
Clients tell me that just talking things through helps them to see their situation much clearer.
There are many different therapies that can be used by counsellors and psychotherapists; some involve looking at past relationships and experiences to make sense of them, and others involve looking at the 'here and now'.
I listen carefully to your concerns and tailor my therapy to meet your need.

We all enjoy a short term fix when we feel weighed down – shopping, meals out, holidays etc. and we often do this in the hope that it will make us feel better. Unfortunately that good feeling may not last and sometimes we even feel worse when it wears off.
So perhaps it is time for you to consider instead investing in your well-being to gain a longer term solution. If you are considering counselling at all the answer is surely “Yes”.
